Beyonce vs. Bin Laden

When pop diva Beyonce announced this week that she was pregnant with hip hop mogul husband Jay-Z‘s child, the news spread on Twitter at the pace of 8,868 tps (tweets per second). A number of weeks ago when it was announced that Osama bin Laden had been killed, the tps rate was 5,106.

This inspired me to find some other facts and figures about social media. Here are 10 that should answer your question: “Should my business be using social media?”

  1. If Facebook was a country, it would be the 3rd most populated in the world. (1. China, 2. India, 3. Facebook, 4. United States, 5. Indonesia, 6. Brazil, 7. Pakistan, 8. Nigeria)
  2. Both Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber each have more Twitter followers than the entire population of: Sweden, Israel, Greece, Switzerland, North Korea, or Ireland
  3. You would need to live for around 1,000 years to watch all the videos on YouTube.
  4. Facebook tops Google for weekly traffic in the US with more than 750 Million active users (with over 250 Million accessing through a mobile device)
  5. 80% of companies use social media for recruitment –95% of these using LinkedIn
  6. 30 Billion pieces of content are shared on Facebook per month
  7. 25 Billion tweets were sent in 2010 (20% of tweets contain a reference to a product or brand)
  8. YouTube is the 2nd largest search engine in the world (more than 3 Billion video views every day)
  9. 20 Million Facebook applications are installed every day
  10. Over 100 hours of video will be uploaded to YouTube while you are reading this blog
So the question you should be asking yourself is not: “Should my business be using social media?” but “How can we use social media effectively?”
