Ali – Fight of the Century

It’s the anniversary of Mohammed Ali and Joe Frazier meeting in the ring for the “Fight of the Century” (March 8, 1971): two skilled, undefeated fighters, both with legitimate claims to the heavyweight crown. I was going to offer these Mohammed Ali quotes on his birthday, but since Ali shares a birthday (January 17) with Benjamin Franklin, I decided to offer Franklin’s quotes then and Ali’s on this anniversary of one of his landmark bouts.

Mohammad Ali is recognized as one of the greatest boxer in history. He is also known as one of the greatest entertainers in history ... a master of the one or two line message that could be funny, poetic, poignant, controversial or a combination of all of those.

“If my mind can conceive it, and my heart can believe it - then I can achieve it.”

“Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee.”

“Live everyday as if it were your last because someday you're going to be right.”

“Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they've been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It's an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It's a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.”

“The man with no imagination has no wings.”

“Inside of a ring or out, ain't nothing wrong with going down. It's staying down that's wrong.”

“What you're thinking is what you're becoming.”

“I hated every minute of training, but I said, 'Don't quit. Suffer now and live the rest of your life as a champion'.”

“He who is not courageous enough to take risks will accomplish nothing in life.”

“The fight is won or lost far away from the witnesses, behind the lines, in the gym, and out there on the road; long before I dance under those lights.”

“Don't count the days, make the days count.”
