Sports Quotes

Often we draw a comparison to the competitive nature and reward-for-performance similarities between sports and business. And quotes from the world of sports are often used to motivate and inspire in the world of business. A good example is legendary coach Vince Lombardi’s famous speech: What It Takes To Be Number One (free download: http://goo.gl/JB5gm).

Well, motivated by the response to one of my blog posts (Unusual Sports Quotes: http://goo.gl/phzMF) here are some quotes from and about the world of sports that lean less toward the motivational and more toward the humorous.

I hope this serves as a quick and beneficial break from your busy day and that after having a quick chuckle you are refreshed and ready to back to productive business action.

"You can make a lot of money in this game. Just ask my ex-wives. Both of them are so rich that neither of their husbands work." -Lee Trevino

“All a manager has to do is keep eleven players happy - the eleven in the reserves. The first team are happy because they are in the first team. -Rodney Marsh

"Goaltending is a normal job, sure. How would you like it in your job if every time you made a small mistake, a red light went on over your desk and 15,000 people stood up and yelled at you?" -Jacques Plante

“If a tie is like kissing your sister, losing is like kissing your grandmother with her teeth out.” -George Brett

“You have to play this game like somebody just hit your mother with a two-by-four.” -Dan Birdwell

“If winning isn't everything, why do they keep score?” -Vince Lombardi

“Trying to hit him (Phil Niekro) was like trying to eat Jell-O with chopsticks.” -Bobby Murcer

“Finish last in your league and they call you Idiot. Finish last in medical school and they call you Doctor.” -Abe Lemons

“Motor racing's less of a sport these days than a commercial break doing 150 mph.” -Peter Dunne

"Always root for the winner. That way you won't be disappointed." -Tug McGraw

“There isn't a single professional sports season now that doesn't go on at least a month too long. Baseball starts in football weather, and football in baseball weather, and basketball overlaps them both.” -James Reston

“You win some, lose some, and wreck some." -Dale Earnhardt

“When it comes to sports I am not particularly interested. Generally speaking, I look upon them as dangerous and tiring activities performed by people with whom I share nothing except the right to trial by jury.” -Fran Lebowitz

“It's going to be exciting... of course, it was exciting when the Titanic went down." -NBA coach Bob Weiss

“My only feeling about superstition is that it's unlucky to be behind at the end of the game.” -Duffy Daugherty

“It's not whether you win or lose - but whether I win or lose.” -Sandy Lyle
To close this post, here’s one man’s thought about why we are so interested in athletic endeavor:

“Sport is where an entire life can be compressed into a few hours, where the emotions of a lifetime can be felt on an acre or two of ground, where a person can suffer and die and rise again on six miles of trails through a New York City park. Sport is a theater where sinner can turn saint and a common man become an uncommon hero, where the past and the future can fuse with the present. Sport is singularly able to give us peak experiences where we feel completely one with the world and transcend all conflicts as we finally become our own potential.” -George A. Sheehan
