1 Billion in Perspective

Facebook announced that they now have 1-billion active users ... let’s put that number in perspective:

Perspective of Time
A billion seconds ago it was 1961.
A billion minutes ago Jesus was alive.
A billion hours ago our ancestors were living in the Stone Age.
A billion days ago no-one walked on the earth on two feet.

Perspective of Pop Culture
That’s more than twice the number of copies sold of the Harry Potter book series (450-million).
That’s almost 4x the number of copies sold of the Super Mario video game (262-million).
That’s almost 9x the viewership of the 2012 Super Bowl (111.3-million).
That’s about 10x the number of copies sold of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” – the best-selling album of all time (about 100-million).
That’s almost 15x the number of people McDonald’s serves daily (68-million).
That’s 16.5x the number of people who rode through Time’s Square subway station last year (60.6-million).

Perspective of Population
That’s about one-seventh of the earth’s population (about 7.044 billion).
That’s more than 3x the current population of the United States (314-million).
In fact, it’s more than the combined current populations of the US, Indonesia, Brazil, and Pakistan.
That's more than the entire estimated population of the world in 1800 (about 978-million).

Perspective of Social Media
That’s about ½ of all the Internet users on the planet (slightly over 2 billion).
That’s twice as many as Twitter has users (around 500-million).
That’s almost 6x as many as LinkedIn has members (around 175-million).
That’s almost 6x as many as Google+ has members (around 175-million).
That’s about 50x as many as Pinterest has members (around 20-million).
