You are a Badass

Blunt might be one way to sum up Jen Sincero’s “You Are a Badass: How to Stop Doubting Your Greatness and Start Living an Awesome Life.” Here’s a taste:

Lose the humble shtick. “Incessant self-depricatingd humor is for losers,” Sincero writes. “Not only are you begging people to think you are a loser, but you’re begging yourself to think you are a loser.” page 61

Don’t cling to “self-sabotaging” life narratives. “Let’s say your story is that you can’t make money,” Sincero writes. “By staying broke you get to be right. You get to be a victim, which makes you dependent on other people and gets you attention.” page 142

Never stay up at night worrying. “Use meditative powers to move troubling thoughts out of your mind,” Sincero writes. “The only thing worse than staying up all night freaking out about something is them being too exhausted the next day to deal with it.” page 176

Treat your professional dreams with  the same urgency and determination you use to pay your rent. “Ever notice how your rent is due in a week and you have no idea how you’re going to play it?” Sincero asks. “You always manage how to figure it out.” page 220

I can’t say that there are a lot of new concepts in this book, but Sincerco’s feisty and funny approach gets some of these points across in direct, effective and often refreshing way.
